Why there's no upload step
WhatsApp displays profile pictures as a square (and crops them to a circle in chats), so a portrait or landscape photo gets force-cropped by the app — usually badly. Sizing it to a 500×500 square yourself first means what you see is what your contacts get. Everything runs locally in your browser.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?+
No — resizing happens entirely in your browser, before WhatsApp ever sees it.
Why 500×500?+
WhatsApp stores DPs as a square around 500px — larger uploads just get scaled down to it. A 500×500 file looks identical and uploads instantly.
My photo isn't square — will it stretch?+
No — it's fitted within the square without distortion. If you want to choose exactly which part fills the square, crop it square first.
Chats show my DP as a circle — should I worry?+
Keep the important part (faces) centered — the circle crop trims the corners of the square. The Circle Crop tool shows you exactly what survives.
