Why there's no upload step
500KB is a tight target usually only reachable by rendering each page as a smaller, more heavily compressed image and rebuilding the PDF from those — this works best for short, simple, or scanned documents. Every attempt happens locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded to find the right setting.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere first?+
No — compression happens entirely in your browser.
Will this always reach exactly 500KB?+
It gets as close as possible while staying under 500KB and keeping pages readable. Long or image-heavy PDFs may not compress that far without becoming hard to read, and the tool tells you if it couldn't quite hit the target.
Will text still be selectable?+
No — pages are converted to images to shrink them, so text is no longer selectable or searchable in the output.
What if 500KB is too tight?+
Try the 1MB or 2MB targets instead.
