Why there's no upload step
Portrait 4:5 posts at 1080×1350 fill roughly 30% more of the mobile screen than a square post, which is why they consistently outperform square on engagement. Uploading the wrong shape means Instagram crops it for you. One thing to know: Instagram's profile grid now previews posts at 3:4, so keep faces and text near the center so both crops look right.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?+
No. Resizing happens entirely in your browser — nothing touches a server before you post it yourself.
Portrait vs square — which should I use?+
Portrait (1080×1350) claims more screen space in the feed and generally performs better. Square (1080×1080) still works fine — we have a separate page preset for it.
Will my photo look stretched?+
No — aspect ratio is preserved, so your photo fits inside the 1080×1350 frame rather than being distorted.
What about the profile grid crop?+
Instagram previews grid thumbnails at 3:4, slightly tighter than 4:5 — keep important content centered and it will survive both crops.
