Why there's no upload step
Compressing a video usually means uploading a large file to a server and waiting. This tool re-encodes your video locally at a lower bitrate, so a large phone recording never has to leave your device just to become small enough to email or message.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?+
No. Compression happens entirely in your browser — the video is decoded, re-recorded at a lower bitrate, and re-encoded locally.
Which quality level should I pick?+
"Medium" is a good default for messaging apps and email. Use "Low" if you need the smallest possible file and can accept more visible compression.
Why does it take about as long as the video itself?+
Your browser has to actually play through the video to capture it — there's no way to render video faster than real time without much heavier tooling.
What format is the output?+
MP4 if your browser supports recording it, otherwise WebM — both play natively in modern browsers and most video apps.
